RUTO FREE TO BE ODM'S FLAG BEARER

Rarieda MP and lawyer Otiende Amollo has weighed in on the growing speculation over whether President William Ruto could seek re-election on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket in 2027, following the death of the party’s long-time leader Raila Odinga.

Speaking during a live interview on Spice FM, Amollo disclosed that Raila, before his passing, had been firm that ODM should not abandon its political identity or sit out the next general election.

“Before his death, Baba made it very clear that ODM must have a candidate in 2027. That was his wish and his instruction,” Amollo said during the Stesha News Live broadcast.

He explained that Raila’s vision was for ODM to remain a key force in shaping Kenya’s political future, regardless of alliances or leadership changes.

“Raila’s wish was to see the party continue to play a major role in shaping Kenya’s political direction, regardless of alliances or leadership transitions,” he added.

Amollo, however, acknowledged that democracy provides room for anyone — including President Ruto — to seek the party’s nomination, provided they meet the required conditions.

“If President Ruto wants to vie on the ODM ticket, nothing should stop that. It is within his democratic right. ODM remains a national party open to all Kenyans,” he stated.

Moreover, Amollo maintained that ODM’s immediate priority should be to consolidate its internal strength rather than lean on any other political formation.

“Whether we decide to support William Ruto in 2027 by not having a candidate or whether we decide to have a candidate to run against him, the first thing that must be done is that ODM must be strong as a party and not be swallowed by UDA or any other party,” he emphasized.

He also underscored the need for unity and adherence to the party’s founding principles.

“ODM must remain guided by democracy and Raila’s legacy of inclusivity,” Amollo affirmed.

The comments come amid increasing speculation about possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 polls, especially between ODM and Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

This also comes against the backdrop of President Ruto’s recent declaration that he would work to safeguard ODM from internal predators and keep it strong — ensuring that the party remains either in government or part of it come 2027, in honour of the late Prime Minister.

Kisii Governor Simba Arati, who also serves as ODM’s deputy party leader, was quoted inviting the President to “return home” to ODM and become its flag bearer.

Political analysts have since speculated about the possibility of President Ruto picking a running mate from ODM — a move seen as a strategic attempt to tap into ODM’s traditional strongholds and Raila Odinga’s loyal base, following signs of waning support in the Mt. Kenya region that was central to his 2022 victory.
