SHA BREAKS SILENCE ON "GHOST HOSPITAL" THAT RECEIVED KSH 20M

The Social Health Authority (SHA) has dismissed reports that it disbursed Ksh20 million to a non-existent hospital, insisting the funds were paid to a legitimate facility in Homa Bay County.
In a statement on Friday August 22, 2025, SHA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mercy Mwangangi clarified that the money was sent to Nyandiwa Level 4 Hospital, which has been operational since the 1970s. She explained that the hospital retained the account name “Nyandiwa Dispensary” after being upgraded, a move that sparked confusion and claims of payments to a ghost facility.
“The disbursement of Ksh19,998,720 was processed in line with established verification protocols and reflects legitimate claims for services rendered,” Dr. Mwangangi said.
SHA revealed that since October 2024, Nyandiwa Hospital has also received Ksh751,504 under the Primary Health Care Fund and Ksh82 million through the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF). All payments, the Authority noted, are published on its website for transparency.
Dr. Mwangangi further clarified that images of an abandoned structure circulated in the media were of an unrelated project built by a previous county administration, stressing that the building has never been contracted by SHA.
She urged media houses to fact-check before publishing, warning that misleading reports could undermine public trust in the ongoing rollout of universal health coverage.
