SHUGAR BOY QUITS RADIO MAISHA FOR AGRICULTURE AND POLITICS

Veteran radio presenter Shugar Boy Me has officially announced his resignation from Radio Maisha after nine years on air, marking the end of a career that saw him grow from an upcoming entertainer into one of Kenya’s most recognizable Swahili radio voices.

Shugar Boy, born Ally Mwayongwa, confirmed his exit through a lengthy statement posted on his official Facebook account, where he reflected on his personal and professional transformation during his time at the station.

“Today marks the end of my tenure at Radio Maisha. Woooow, it has been a nine-year sweet ride here. I came in very virgin and now leaving fully equipped. I came in as a boy leaving as a mature man. I came in broke now leaving as a multi-millionaire,” he wrote.

He added, “Maisha ni Shugaboy na Shugaboy ni Maisha. Apart from the sweet and sour memories, hii tenje nayo imenijenga. Am not a show off person but today allow me to scream zile vitu tisa ndani ya miaka tisa hii radio imenipea wallahi.”

In his farewell post, Shugar Boy outlined the investments he made during his nine-year stay, crediting his radio career for enabling him to achieve financial stability. He listed three personal cars — a Toyota Crown, Toyota Vitz and Lexus — two 14-seater matatus, a tuk-tuk, five motorcycles, a liquor business, two Swahili rental houses, four pieces of land, and a five-bedroom house currently under construction.

He also acknowledged the stability the job gave him, adding humorously that the station ensured he had “three meals a day and rent for nine straight years.”

Despite publicly sharing his achievements, he clarified that his intention was not to boast, stating: “The above should not make you usinichangie nikipata shida.”

Shugar Boy joined Radio Maisha around 2015 after initially building his profile as a comedian and entertainer - which shown him bag Comedian of the Year in the 2016 Coast Music Awards.

His background in comedy - beginning right from Churchill stand ups helped shape his energetic and humorous on-air personality, which resonated strongly with listeners.

At Radio Maisha, which operates under the Standard Media Group, he rose through the ranks to become one of the lead presenters on the popular breakfast programme Maisha Asubuhi. The show cemented his place as a household name and earned him a loyal audience across the country.

Over the years, he became known for his engaging storytelling, relatable humour, and ability to connect with everyday listeners, helping strengthen the station’s position in Kenya’s competitive radio industry.

Shugar Boy said he is now shifting his focus to agriculture and politics, signaling a major transition away from full-time broadcasting.
“About time to focus on agriculture and politics,” he stated in his post.

Despite expressing his intention to venture into politics, Shugar Boy Me did not specify which elective position he plans to contest, leaving uncertainty over his immediate political ambitions.

His planned transition mirrors a growing trend of media personalities moving into public office. Notable examples include Felix Odiwuor (Jalang'o), the current Lang’ata Member of Parliament, and Nyali's Mohammed Ali, who previously worked as a television journalist before successfully entering politics. Both leveraged their media visibility and public influence to build viable political careers.

He also made it clear that he is not planning an immediate return to radio unless the offer reflects his experience and value.
“Not joining any other media house again unless for a pay above 700k, non-negotiable,” he declared.

As he closed his message, the presenter expressed gratitude to colleagues, fans, and supporters who were part of his journey.
“Thanks for everyone we enjoyed the ride together. Ni wengi, can’t mention. Bye my love Radio Maisha. Tuko mbele pamoja.”

His departure marks the end of a significant chapter not only in his life, but also for Radio Maisha, where he spent nearly a decade building his career, growing his influence, and establishing himself as one of Kenya’s most prominent Swahili radio personalities.
