METHU VOWS TO JAIL RUTO IF OPPOSITION FORMS GOVERNMENT

Nyandarua Senator John Methu has ignited a fresh political storm after publicly declaring that he would seek to jail President William Ruto if the opposition forms the next government.

Speaking on Thursday, April 23 during a political rally in Kitui County, the first-term senator directly appealed to opposition leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka and Rigathi Gachagua, to consider him for the powerful Interior Cabinet Secretary position.

“I want to ask you, Kalonzo and Gachagua, to appoint me as the Interior Cabinet Secretary. Within two weeks, my first action will be to arrest Ruto and throw him in jail,” Methu stated.

He doubled down on the remarks, arguing that sending the Head of State back to his rural home in Sugoi would not be sufficient.
“Sending him to Sugoi alone would be doing a disservice to the people. He will spend five years in jail. Let us put him behind bars because this man is a thief and a murderer,” Methu sensationally claimed.

During the same address, Methu also took aim at the President’s spending, referencing reports that State House expenditure under Ruto had surpassed that of his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta within a shorter period.
“In three years, his State House expenditure has exceeded that of Uhuru during his 10 years in office, yet the teachers who marked the national exams have not been paid,” he remarked.

The rally in Kitui formed part of a broader opposition mobilisation drive, with leaders crisscrossing the country to consolidate support. Methu’s remarks were met with cheers from sections of the crowd, with some supporters praising his blunt approach and framing it as a sign of decisive leadership.

However, critics have warned that such statements risk portraying the use of state power as personal or political retaliation. Some leaders and observers have cautioned that arresting any individual, particularly a sitting or former head of state, is a legal process bound by institutions, not personal declarations.

The controversy adds to Methu’s growing profile within opposition politics. He has recently been tasked by Gachagua to help consolidate support in the Mt. Kenya region, amid what insiders describe as a broader strategy to counter President Ruto’s influence there.

The senator had earlier made headlines during a funeral service for former Olkalou MP David Kiaraho, where he confronted the President directly, telling him that while he respected his office, he did not fear him, and criticized unfulfilled promises to Nyandarua residents.

Methu’s recent tone has cast him as a firebrand and a loyalist of Rigathi Gachagua, with some critics describing him as reckless with his words, while others view him as a fearless leader.
His potential rise to the Interior Cabinet Secretary position would mark a significant step in his budding political career, which gained momentum after he consolidated his base in the 2022 elections.

While his close political ties to Gachagua could strengthen his chances of securing the influential post, his hardline rhetoric has raised questions about whether he would prioritise retribution or focus on serving Kenyans if he ultimately secures the position he is eyeing.
