Somali Envoy Stands Firm on Sportsmanship After Nairobi Tournament

Somalia’s ambassador to Kenya, Jabril Abdulle, has reminded fans that football is more than just competition — it’s about friendship, unity, and regional cooperation.

The envoy hosted Mogadishu City Club at the Somali Embassy in Nairobi after their recent match in Kenya, describing the team’s presence as a symbol of hope and resilience for young people across East Africa.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday, September 24, Abdulle condemned incidents that followed the game.

“We regret and firmly condemn the actions of a few individuals whose behavior overshadowed the remarkable performance by both teams,” he said.

He went on to thank Kenyan authorities, including the police, Kenya Police FC, FKF, and Sports Kenya, for ensuring safety at Nyayo Stadium and for supporting Mogadishu City Club.

“Football is more than a game – it is a bridge of friendship, a unifier of peoples, and a reflection of African unity,” he added.

Beyond the pitch, Abdulle tied the tournament to broader Somalia–Kenya relations in trade, education, investment, and culture.

Mogadishu City Club coach Abdirahman Ali also distanced the team from the incidents and offered an apology.

“On behalf of Mogadishu City Club, we sincerely apologize to the government and people of Kenya,” he said.

“Football is about unity, respect, and friendship, and we fully support any action taken against those individuals,” he added.
