London, UK – Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has called on the international community to exert equal pressure on Sudan’s warring factions to compel them into peace negotiations.
Speaking at the London Conference on Sudan, Mudavadi advocated for inclusive dialogue and the creation of safe spaces where all Sudanese voices can be heard.
He urged donor countries to fulfill their financial pledges to assist millions displaced by the war and emphasized the need to support regional bodies like the African Union and IGAD in leading mediation efforts.
The high-level forum brought together representatives from over a dozen countries, including the US, Canada, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Saudi Arabia. However, Mudavadi noted that the delegates failed to reach a consensus and called for more concerted efforts to resolve the conflict.
Kenya’s active role in regional peacebuilding has drawn both praise and criticism. Nairobi’s move to host RSF leaders angered the Sudanese government, which retaliated by banning Kenyan imports.
Sudan’s civil war, pitting the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023, has killed thousands and displaced nearly 13 million people. While SAF recently regained control of Khartoum, RSF forces have intensified attacks in Darfur, displacing hundreds of thousands more.
