The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) has confirmed that the process for the release of Stephen Munyakho, a Kenyan citizen imprisoned in Saudi Arabia, has officially begun.
Munyakho has been in detention since 2011 after being convicted for the death of a Yemeni national.
His case drew widespread attention after he was sentenced to death under Saudi law. However, negotiations between the Kenyan government, SUPKEM, and Saudi authorities led to the postponement of his execution and an opportunity to seek his release through a blood money settlement.
Speaking to the press on Friday, SUPKEM officials stated that discussions with the victim's family and Saudi authorities have been progressing well, and the formal steps for Munyakho’s release are now in motion.
Initially, the blood money required for his release was set at 10 million Saudi Riyals (approximately Ksh352 million) but was later reduced to 3.5 million Saudi Riyals (about Ksh120 million).
Efforts to raise the required amount have been ongoing, with appeals made to both the Kenyan public and well-wishers.
The Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also been actively engaged in securing Munyakho’s release.
Officials have cited strong diplomatic ties between Kenya and Saudi Arabia as a key factor in the ongoing negotiations.
Munyakho’s family, who have been campaigning for his freedom for years, have expressed hope that he will soon return home.
SUPKEM has assured that they will continue working closely with all involved parties to ensure a successful resolution of the case.
The release process is expected to take some time as legal and diplomatic procedures are completed.
