TIKTOKER OMOLLO DIES AFTER ROBERRY AMBUSH AMID SHOOT

Kenyan TikTok creator Derrick Angwenyi Bundi, popularly known as Omollo, has died at the age of 21 after a robbery incident turned tragic during a content shoot in Juja, Kiambu County.

Omollo was with four friends at Kigwe Farm in Juja South on Tuesday evening when they were confronted by four men who allegedly wielded knives and demanded their mobile phones, according to a police report.

The group had reportedly walked from Juja township to the secluded area at about 4:30pm to film content and spend time together. The location, which is surrounded by bushes and abandoned quarries, was relatively isolated from nearby settlements.

At around 6pm, the group was reportedly ambushed. As the attackers demanded their phones, the friends scattered in different directions in an attempt to escape.

Police records indicate that Omollo ran towards an abandoned quarry, where he fell into the open pit. He sustained serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

One of his companions, a 22-year-old student, reportedly suffered an arm injury while fleeing, while another member of the group lost a Samsung A16 phone to the attackers.

Omollo's phone was later recovered near where he was found.

Following the incident, police officers from Juja, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and crime-scene investigators visited the area. His body was subsequently retrieved and taken to General Kago Mortuary in Thika, where it awaits a postmortem examination.

Juja Sub-County Police Commander Isaac Kombo said detectives had launched investigations and were pursuing leads that could help identify and apprehend the four suspects.

The circumstances surrounding Omollo's death have been accompanied by conflicting information online, particularly regarding his university.

Several early reports and social media posts identified him as a student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). However, the police report filed at Juja Farm Police Station identifies him as a third-year student at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK).

The clarification comes as authorities continue investigating the incident and tracing the suspects believed to have carried out the robbery.

Away from the tragedy, Omollo had been steadily building a name for himself in Kenya's digital entertainment space.

He had more than 131,000 followers on TikTok and accumulated millions of likes through comedy and campus-themed content. His videos drew heavily from everyday university experiences, including student friendships, examinations, campus relationships and the challenges faced by young people.

One of the features that made his videos particularly recognisable was his regular use of a distinctive face filter. The filter became closely associated with his online identity and helped give his content a unique visual style.

For many of his followers, Omollo's appeal lay in his ability to turn ordinary campus experiences into short, relatable and humorous videos.

His sudden death has since sparked an outpouring of grief among fellow students, friends, fans and members of Kenya's growing creator community.

A friend also shared what appeared to be their final WhatsApp exchanges with Omollo in a TikTok video, providing an emotional glimpse into the conversations surrounding the planned content shoot.

The messages showed that what began as an ordinary day of creating content and spending time with friends would end in a tragedy that has left many of Omollo's followers struggling to come to terms with his death.

As tributes continue to emerge online, police are maintaining efforts to track down the four suspects wanted in connection with the robbery.
