As leaders from both political divides brace up for the August 2027 presidential elections , anticipation has built what is expected to be a highly competitive feat with a recent online poll placing former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i at the forefront with a commanding margin ahead President William Ruto and other several key political figures.
The survey, conducted by political analyst Ndwaru Senior and shared on X, attracted nearly 3,000 participants had Matiang’i at the top with a 40.7 percent support, followed by President William Ruto at 26.4 percent. Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka garnered 21.2 percent, while former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua trailed with 11.7 percent.
Although the poll was not very formal, it provides an interesting snapshot highlighting Matiang’i’s as an underrated factor but with a growing political appeal. This showing may significantly shape the ongoing United Opposition talks about fielding a single presidential candidate in 2027.
Speculation points to a possible coalition in which Fred Matiang’i could emerge as the flag bearer — buoyed by a previous endorsement from former President Uhuru Kenyatta and growing support from the Gen Z voters, who make up more than half of Kenya’s electorate.
The Wiper Patriotic Front boss is projected to be Fred Matiang’i’s possible running mate, with the former DP and DCP leader tipped for the Prime Cabinet Secretary post. However, Kalonzo had previously dismissed the idea of deputizing anyone, insisting he is eyeing the top seat — a stance shared by Gachagua. Still, the urgency to unseat President Ruto might compel the opposition to rally behind the strongest among their ranks.
