Embakasi North MP James Gakuya has called on President William Ruto to take personal responsibility in compensating families affected by the recent GenZ protest insisting that public funds should not be used for such purposes.
Speaking on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, Gakuya argued that while financial compensation might temporarily ease the pain of grieving families, it cannot fully address the losses suffered. He further stressed that if the President was sincere about assisting victims, he should channel his own resources rather than burden taxpayers.
“Compensation may cool the hearts of affected families, but it is not enough. If President Ruto truly wants to compensate, he should use his own money, not taxpayers’ money,” Gakuya stated.
President Ruto had appointed a 16-member team to oversee compensation for victims of the GenZ protests . This move by the government aims to pacify the uproar that had developed especially among the youthful class over excessive use of force and police brutality during protests.
Among the compensation panel , the Law Society of Kenya President, Faith Odhiambo was also appointed - an issue that has elicited skepticism over her capacity to run the affairs of LSK as an independent body and to serve the new assigned role by the executive.
