"WRONGFULLY TAGGED: FOUR KENYAN FILMMAKERS FREED AFTER BBC MIX-UP "

Four Kenyan filmmakers arrested in Nairobi on Saturday have been released without charge, following a brief detention that mistakenly linked them to the BBC.

The group was picked up by police over what authorities described as “unauthorized filming” in a sensitive area. Their arrest quickly made headlines after early reports suggested they were working for the British Broadcasting Corporation.

However, BBC has since issued a categorical denial, stating: “We would like to confirm that the individuals arrested in Nairobi are not employed by the BBC, nor were they working on our behalf.”

Representing the filmmakers, lawyer Ian Mutiso confirmed their release on Sunday and maintained that no laws were broken.
“My clients were lawfully conducting their work. Their detention was unnecessary, but we’re glad the matter has been resolved without charges,” Mutiso said.

Nairobi Police Commander Bernard Kamau said the arrest was a precaution. “There was confusion about their activities, but once everything was clarified, they were released.”

The incident has sparked concern among creatives and press freedom advocates, with calls for clearer guidelines on media work and better communication between authorities and content creators.

The filmmakers have not yet released a public statement.
