Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a scathing warning to opposition leaders, accusing them of flirting with betrayal ahead of the 2027 general elections. While addressing Kenyans in Baltimore on Sunday, Gachagua cautioned Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and others within the opposition coalition against accepting any political offers from President William Ruto’s camp.

He claimed that any move to abandon the opposition cause would be met with harsh consequences from the public. “Anybody who will be bribed by Ruto to leave our team will be hanged by Kenyans,” he declared, triggering cheers from the diaspora audience. Gachagua stressed that this is not the time for political sellouts, calling for unity among opposition leaders in the fight for reform.

As he pushes forward with his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), Gachagua used the platform to unveil a raft of proposals aimed at empowering Kenyans living abroad. He pledged to allocate nomination slots for diaspora members in both the National Assembly and the Senate if the party garners enough support in the 2027 elections.

“I want one nominated senator from the diaspora to share global perspectives and enrich our national discourse,” Gachagua said. He further announced plans to create space for specially elected Members of County Assembly (MCAs) from the diaspora in counties where DCP gains strength, targeting at least 25 devolved units.

Gachagua’s remarks come as his party continues to build grassroots momentum, especially among Kenyans abroad. His latest statements are also likely to stir tensions within the opposition, with speculation mounting over possible defections ahead of the 2027 polls.

His public rebuke of Kalonzo and simultaneous olive branch to the diaspora highlight a dual strategy tightening loyalty at home while recruiting influence abroad.

The 2027 race is clearly underway, and Gachagua seems intent on positioning himself not just as a political player, but as a voice for Kenyans globally.
