British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK) officials failed to appear before Parliament on Tuesday August 12, 2025, for questioning over alleged human rights abuses linked to the unit’s activities in the country.
The Defence and Foreign Relations Committee had summoned BATUK representatives to respond to claims of atrocities, including environmental damage and mistreatment of local communities in Laikipia and surrounding areas.
Committee chairperson [insert name] expressed disappointment at their absence, terming it a sign of disrespect to Parliament and the Kenyan people. Lawmakers now say they will issue fresh summons and consider legal measures to compel their attendance.
The no-show comes amid rising tensions between residents and the British army over unresolved allegations, including the killing of a Kenyan woman in Nanyuki in 2012 and recent fires linked to military training exercises.
