Human rights activist Boniface Mwangi has officially declared his intention to run for the presidency in the 2027 general elections. He made the announcement on Wednesday August 27, 2025, during Katiba Day celebrations at Ufungamano House
During the event, Mwangi urged Kenyans to reflect on his journey as an activist and embrace a new vision for the country. “To mark 15 years since the promulgation of the Constitution, let’s gather to honour what we have done together, out of love for our country,” Mwangi stated. “We have always fought for a better country. Now, it is time to explore new possibilities for building a Kenya that works for all of us.”
He called on Kenyans from all backgrounds to support his campaign, emphasizing that he will only work with individuals who have no tainted past. “It would be a mistake to work with anyone who is already compromised. Mwangi said
He insisted that real change cannot come from individuals who have previously served in government without delivering meaningful results. In July, Mwangi was arrested at his home in Lukenya, Machakos County, by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and charged with terrorism-related offenses. However, the charges were later dropped. Authorities alleged that he was involved in coordinating and financing activities linked to the June 25 protests, which resulted in multiple deaths, injuries to security officers, and destruction of property.
During the raid, detectives reportedly seized several items, including nine external hard drives, two laptops, two unused teargas canisters from his office at Mageuzi Hub in Hurlingham, a blank 7.62mm ammunition round, company seals, cheque books, stamp duty documents, and a company stamp.
