The protests come at a tense time for the agency, just days after a shooting incident at the CDC campus that left a police officer dead. Observers say the turmoil threatens to weaken the institution’s ability to safeguard Americans’ health.
Meanwhile, the White House has tapped Jim O’Neill, a close ally of Kennedy, as acting CDC director. His appointment signals a shift toward the administration’s “Make America Healthy Again” agenda, which has already included canceling $500 million worth of mRNA vaccine contracts and disbanding the CDC’s advisory panel on immunizations.
Monarez is contesting her removal, with legal experts noting that only the president has the authority to dismiss a Senate-confirmed CDC director.
