CHIEF KADHI SHEIKH ABDULHALIM HUSSEIN PASSES AWAY IN MOMBASA

Kenya's Chief Kadhi, Sheikh Athman Abdulhalim Hussein, has passed away in Mombasa, today Thursday 10 July 2025, sending shockwaves through the country’s Muslim community and the judiciary.
The respected Islamic scholar died early Thursday morning after a period of illness. His death was confirmed by Jamia Mosque Imam Sheikh Jamaludin Osman.
According to close family sources, Sheikh Hussein had recently traveled to India for specialized treatment but returned to Kenya a few weeks ago. His health had remained delicate until his passing.
Born in Malindi, Sheikh Abdulhalim began his religious education at Watamu Primary School before joining Malindi High School. He later pursued Islamic Law at the prestigious Al-Azhar University in Egypt, graduating in 2001.
He served as a Kadhi in various regions including Mombasa, Kwale, and Nairobi before being appointed Chief Kadhi in July 2023 by the Judicial Service Commission. As Chief Kadhi, he presided over matters related to marriage, divorce, succession, and personal law for Muslims, as outlined in Kenya’s Constitution.
His funeral prayer (janaza) is scheduled to take place this evening at Masjid Nuru in Bondeni, Mombasa, after Asr prayers. He will be laid to rest at Kikowani Cemetery in the Seif Halwa section.
Chief Justice Martha Koome led tributes, describing Sheikh Hussein as “a humble and deeply principled leader who served with integrity and wisdom.”
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale also mourned the cleric, saying, “He was a great scholar, a pillar of moral guidance, and a voice of unity for the Muslim Ummah in Kenya.”
Other leaders, including Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, also expressed their condolences.
The Judicial Service Commission is expected to initiate the process of selecting a new Chief Kadhi in the coming days.
Sheikh Abdulhalim Hussein is remembered for his deep commitment to Islamic jurisprudence, fairness in the courtroom, and unifying leadership within the Kenyan Muslim community.
