Dozens of mourners were injured on Saturday at a memorial service for Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga when the crowds swelled, with some of those critically injured taken to a nearby hospital, a Kenyan Red Cross official told Reuters.
A Reuters witness saw injured people being treated at the location in the western Kenyan city of Kisumu, the political stronghold of Odinga's Luo tribe. The Standard newspaper had reported on X that hundreds were injured.
Two people were killed and more than 160 others injured at Odinga's state funeral in Nairobi on Friday, said aid group Doctors Without Borders.
Odinga, a Kenyan political giant for decades who was a former political prisoner and five-time failed presidential candidate, died on Wednesday aged 80 in India, where he had been receiving medical treatment.
He enjoyed a loyal fan base in the East African country and a public viewing of his body on Thursday turned violent when officers fired into the air to disperse huge crowds after they had stormed a gate at a stadium where the ceremony was taking place. Three people were killed, police reported.
His body was brought from Nairobi to Kisumu on Saturday for a last public viewing.Large crowds were witnessed crying, waving Kenyan flags and at one point pushing one another in a fracas at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Kisumu.
A road procession was planned from Kisumu to his Bondo homestead, but following the incident, his body will now be flown to Bondo, the Standard newspaper said.
