DCI TIGHTENS GRIP ON ACTIVIST MWANGI AS WIFE ALLEGES ORCHESTRATED PLOT

The wife of detained activist Boniface Mwangi has offered fresh insight into the events that followed his dramatic arrest, painting a picture of a government operation she believes is aimed at silencing one of the country’s most vocal dissenters.

On Sunday, July 20, journalist and activist Hellen Njeri Mwangi was at Pangani Police Station where her husband is currently being held. She disclosed that he had earlier been taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters for interrogation and to sign undisclosed documents an action he reportedly declined before being returned to the police station. Mwangi is expected to appear in court on Monday, July 21, though the specific charges remain unclear.

According to Njeri, the circumstances surrounding his arrest point to a deliberate effort to frame him. She claimed that officers mentioned they were searching for explosives during the raid, suggesting a possible attempt to link him to terrorism-related charges. Her statements come amid concerns that the evidence recovered among them teargas canisters and a single 7.62mm blank round was part of a broader plan to build a case against him.

Details released by the DCI indicate that Mwangi was arrested at his Lukenya home on Saturday, July 19, during a coordinated security operation. Officers recovered two mobile phones, a laptop, and notebooks. A follow-up search at his Mageuzi Hub office in Hurlingham led to the seizure of several external hard drives, additional laptops, company seals, chequebooks, and office documents. Investigators have flagged these items as part of the case file being prepared for court.

The DCI maintains that Mwangi is under investigation for facilitating terrorist activities, allegedly linked to the June 25 protests. They also cite unlawful possession of ammunition among the expected charges.

As pressure mounts from human rights groups and opposition figures demanding transparency, all eyes are now on Monday’s court proceedings to determine whether the state’s case will hold or whether this will be viewed as yet another crackdown on activism under the guise of national security.
