The death of Albert Ojwang at Nairobi Central Police Station has elicited a mix of reactions — the police alleging suicide while activists claim a planned retribution against the social media influencer over a post allegedly linked to Deputy IG, Eliud Langat.
Ojwang, who is a teacher and Pwani University almunus, was reportedly arrested on Saturday, June, 7, in a gathering with his family, in Migori, and was declared dead upon Sunday morning, with police claiming that he injured himself.
Reports from friends and family, stated that Ojwang was arrested for an X post rated as “derogatory” toward DIG Eliud Langat.
He was then ferried a 350km distance from Migori to Nairobi, further raising eyebrows on possible orchestration of his death.
They further alleged that he was detained without being booked in the Occurrence Book (OB) , a mater that seemed suspicious.
Reports from inmates refuted police narratives stating that they heard Ojwang groaning for help.
On the other hand, the National Police Service (NPS) maintained that Ojwang was “lawfully arrested” and that the officer in duty found Ojwang with “blood oozing from his head," enhancing that it was a suicide, however family and activists were denied access to the cell where he allegedly died.
The unfolding has caused an uproar , activists and family calling for post- mortem, while netizens firing at the government, terming it as a "killer regime" , and the DIG , who allegedly called the shots, however, Langat has not responded to the claims.
