The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has recovered a parcel of public land in Kakamega valued at Ksh 20 million, previously belonging to the Ministry of Housing.
The contested property, Kakamega Municipality Block 111/100, measuring approximately 0.9 hectares, was set aside in 1974 as trust land for civil servants’ housing. Court records indicate it was illegally subdivided in 1996 and one of the portions fraudulently leased for 99 years to a private individual, Peter Alubale.
Delivering his judgment, Magistrate Philip Mutua ruled that the land was public property and could not have been lawfully allocated to private ownership. The court declared the lease null and void, ordering its cancellation and restitution to the government.
EACC said the recovery is part of its wider national campaign to reclaim grabbed public assets, with more than 400 cases currently before the courts involving property worth about Ksh 50 billion.
