Residents of Muthiga Village in Salgaa, Rongai, Nakuru County, have been left in shock after an elderly couple was brutally murdered in their house on Sunday.
The two victims, Joseph Kihiti, 90, and his wife Bethrosa Wanjiku, 63, were found dead in disturbing conditions.
According to local authorities, Kihiti’s body lay on the bed, while Wanjiku’s was found in the living room. Area Chief Stephen Nderitu said the alarm was raised when the couple did not attend church — a routine which they seldom missed.
“Members of the church and residents went to the house and observed that the front door was locked. At the back, we were greeted with a pool of blood and the door was open,” he recalled.
Confirming the incident, Rongai Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer Donata Atieno said preliminary findings showed that the couple was subjected to extreme violence. Investigators said the murders could have occurred on Friday evening, though the bodies were discovered two days later.
The couple, who lived alone on their farm, had reportedly no known disputes or enemies. Authorities have also confirmed nothing appeared to have been stolen from the house, deepening the mystery surrounding the attack.
Speaking in anguish, the couple’s son, John Njogu, expressed his disbelief over the killing. "Why would anyone think of taking my father's life at such an age?" he asked, battling his emotions.
