Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has shed new light on the shock resignation of Githurai Ward MCA Deonysias Mwangi Waithira, suggesting that the lawmaker may be leaving politics for opportunities abroad.
Mwangi, who was elected on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, tendered his resignation on September 17, effective November 1. In his letter, he cited stalled development projects and unfulfilled county mandates as the reason for his exit.
But speaking on Wednesday September17, 2025, Sakaja downplayed the development and claimed he had been informed that Mwangi had received a United States green card and intended to relocate. The governor, however, declined to reveal the source of the information, dismissing the resignation as “drama” and urging the public to focus on service delivery.
He further denied claims that delayed salaries or county financial woes prompted the MCA’s decision, insisting staff salaries have never been delayed beyond a month.
Mwangi’s resignation comes amid growing frustration among Nairobi MCAs over stalled projects and unfulfilled pledges, sparking fresh debate over Governor Sakaja’s handling of the city’s development agenda.
