Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães has spoken publicly for the first time following the heartbreaking penalty miss that handed Paris Saint-Germain a dramatic UEFA Champions League final victory in Budapest.
The Brazilian centre-back saw his decisive spot-kick sail over the crossbar during a tense shootout, allowing PSG to secure a 4-3 victory on penalties and become only the second club in the modern Champions League era to successfully defend the European crown.
The painful miss ended Arsenal's dream of completing a historic Premier League and Champions League double in a season that had already seen Mikel Arteta's side end a 22-year wait for a league title.
The final had ended 1-1 after extra time. Kai Havertz gave Arsenal an early lead before Ousmane Dembele equalised for the French champions from the penalty spot. With neither side able to find a winner, the contest was decided by penalties.
After David Raya's save from Nuno Mendes briefly gave Arsenal hope, misses from Eberechi Eze and Gabriel ultimately proved costly as PSG lifted the trophy.
As celebrations erupted among the Paris Saint-Germain players, one of the most touching moments of the night came from PSG captain Marquinhos. Rather than immediately joining his teammates in celebration, the Brazilian defender rushed to console his international teammate Gabriel, who was visibly devastated after the miss.
Marquinhos embraced the Arsenal defender and reportedly offered words of encouragement ahead of their upcoming duties with Brazil. The gesture resonated deeply with fans, particularly because Marquinhos himself experienced similar heartbreak after missing a penalty for Brazil against Croatia at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Gabriel Martinelli and several Arsenal players also gathered around the defender as emotions overwhelmed the Gunners squad following the crushing defeat.
Taking to Instagram after the match, Gabriel admitted the pain of the moment but expressed pride in what Arsenal had achieved throughout the campaign.
"It's painful, but I'm proud of this team and everything we achieved together this season."
"Thank you to our incredible fans for your support every step of the way. You deserve to celebrate this journey with us and enjoy the parade today."
"See you next season!!!"
"Love, Big Gabi."
Questions were raised after the final about why a central defender was entrusted with Arsenal's fifth penalty. Arteta later revealed that Gabriel had volunteered for the responsibility after several of the club's regular penalty specialists were no longer on the pitch.
"He wanted to take number five honestly," Arteta explained.
"We have prepared and trained for this moment. Normally the penalty takers would be Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz. We knew that if we got extra time and penalties, the takers would be different players."
The Arsenal manager admitted the team lacked the precision required in the decisive moments but refused to single out any individual for blame.
Declan Rice was equally supportive of his teammates, insisting neither Gabriel nor Eze should carry the burden of defeat alone.
"They are devastated. Obviously to miss a penalty in a Champions League final is not nice."
"We love them, we're with them. It happens in football. They're not going to be the last players to miss penalties in finals."
"Without those two this season we wouldn't have won the Premier League. It's football and it's cruel, but we take positives and we keep going."
Despite the disappointment in Europe, Arsenal supporters showed their appreciation for Gabriel during the club's Premier League trophy parade in north London. Thousands of fans lined the streets to celebrate the club's first league title in over two decades, with several banners carrying messages of support for the Brazilian defender.
The scenes demonstrated the strong bond between the players and supporters, who chose to focus on a memorable season rather than a single painful moment.
Arteta also thanked Arsenal fans for standing by the team throughout the campaign, describing the title-winning season as a special achievement despite falling one step short of European glory.
For Gabriel, the images of Budapest may linger for some time, but the support from teammates, supporters and even opponents such as Marquinhos served as a reminder that there is another life beyond the field .
