Former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua has disclosed that President William Ruto has been making efforts to close the rifts between them through constant phone calls, but, he has kept stoic.
Speaking in a media interview on Monday, June 16, 2025, Gachagua labeled Ruto as a foe to the Mount Kenya region and he has no time to pick his calls.
“President Ruto attempted to call me, but I don’t have time for him, so I ignored his call,” he stated.
The former DP also took issue with the ongoing empowerment programs in some parts of the country, arguing that while certain areas receive substantial support, Mount Kenya is being offered symbolic items that lack practical value.
“It’s very embarrassing to see that the kind of empowerment being brought in in Mt Kenya is beans, while other places like Kapseret people are being empowered with matatus and motorbikes."
The Ex - number two went on commenting on his presidential ambitions, expressing readiness to step down in favour of his co-opposition member , if it would prevent President Ruto from winning a second term.
“I am a presidential candidate, but if we sit down as the opposition and determine that my candidature would lead to William Ruto winning a second term, I will withdraw and support Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, or Eugene Wamalwa—whichever of them is best positioned to challenge Ruto."
He further presented chances of him being the opposition flag bearer, if he proves ability to mobilize the most constituents.
"They have also said they would support me if I garner enough support, because the most important thing is to send Ruto home,” Gachagua added.
Gachagua also encouraged the Gen Z demographic to register as voters, voicing optimism that the 2027 elections will be transparent and credible, despite raising doubts over the integrity of the newly appointed IEBC commissioners.
“No individual, no leader, and no authority can claim to hold the sovereign right to block or deny Kenyans their fundamental right to exercise their will. Democracy is the voice of the people, and it is through their collective voice that change, progress, and justice are achieved," the DCP leader emphasized that sovereign power lies with the Kenyan people and should not be compromised by any individual or institution.
