August 1 is observed as National Girlfriend’s Day, a day meant to honour the unique bond shared among women—whether as friends, sisters, or romantic partners. Originally created to celebrate women’s friendships, the day has now expanded to include partners and all those who play a vital emotional role in each other’s lives. The celebration focuses on recognising the support, laughter, and companionship that women provide each other. Female friendships are often built on years of trust, late-night conversations, and unwavering support during difficult times. From sharing private jokes to being each other’s emergency contacts, these bonds hold emotional value.
The core message of the day continues to centre around female connections that are “real, raw, and unconditional.” While the term “girlfriend” often suggests a romantic partner, National Girlfriend’s Day is not limited to that context. It also acknowledges the role of best friends, roommates, colleagues, and others who form an important part of a woman’s emotional world. This day offers people a chance to reflect on and appreciate the emotional strength and friendship of the women in their lives.
The word girlfriend first appeared in 1859. It was originally defined as female friends. In the 1920s, the term dating became popular and before long girlfriend took a second meaning of a romantic relationship between a boyfriend and a girlfriend. To this day girlfriend continues to have both meanings, either a platonic relationship between girls or someone you are in a romantic relationship with. National Girlfriends Day was created in 2006 by Allie Savarino Kline and Sally Rodgers.
