Boniface Kariuki, the hawker who was shot at close range during a protest in Nairobi two weeks ago, has died.
Kariuki passed away today-Monday 30 June at 3:15 p.m while undergoing treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital, according to family spokesperson Emily Wanjira. He had been in critical condition since the shooting, which occurred in the city centre during anti-government demonstrations that turned chaotic.
The 22-year-old had been selling face masks and snacks when he was reportedly caught in a confrontation between police officers and protesters. Eyewitnesses claim he was unarmed and attempting to flee the scene when he was shot.
His death has sparked renewed calls for police accountability and justice for victims of alleged excessive force. Several human rights organizations have condemned the incident, urging the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to expedite investigations into the matter.
"This is not just about Boniface. It’s about all the innocent lives endangered during protests," said Wanjira, speaking outside the hospital. "We want justice, and we want answers."
The family is expected to release funeral arrangements later this week.
