Heavy Rain Forecasted This Weekend

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rains in several parts of the country this weekend. Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, and Kisumu are among the 36 counties expected to receive showers.

In a five-day forecast from Saturday, February 1, to Wednesday, February 5, 2025, Kenya Met predicts that despite the rains, temperatures will remain high across most regions. The Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Nyeri, Murang’a, and Embu, will experience afternoon and nighttime showers on Saturday. More rainfall is expected on Sunday afternoon, while mornings will be cloudy before giving way to sunshine.

From Monday to Wednesday, these areas will see sunny intervals in the mornings and afternoons, with partly cloudy nights. Nairobi will record a high of 29°C on Saturday and 28°C on Sunday, with lows of 9°C and 8°C, respectively. Temperatures will drop slightly from Monday, with highs of 27°C and lows of 7°C.

The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley—covering counties like Kisumu, Kisii, Nakuru, and Kakamega—will see rain throughout Saturday and Sunday. Monday will bring afternoon showers, while Tuesday will be sunny. On Wednesday, the morning will start with sunshine before showers return in the afternoon. The highest temperature in these areas will be 31°C on Sunday, with lows of 10°C.

Coastal counties, including Mombasa, Kilifi, and Kwale, will remain mostly dry but could experience cloudy nights. Daytime temperatures will be high, exceeding 34°C, while nights will be warm at around 23°C.

In the southeastern lowlands, covering Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, and Taita Taveta, as well as parts of Tana River County, afternoon and nighttime showers are expected on Saturday. Sunday will bring morning rains, but the region will be mostly sunny from Monday to Wednesday. Daytime temperatures could hit 34°C, with lows of 12°C.Kenya Met Director General Dr. David Gikungu has urged residents to stay alert. He warned that strong easterly winds of up to 25 knots (12.5 m/s) are expected in the northwestern and northeastern parts of the country.
