ICHUNG’WAH UNDER FIRE OVER 'KIAMBU NOT PART OF MT KENYA' REMARK

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has sparked political uproar after declaring that Kiambu should not be considered part of the Mt. Kenya region.
Speaking during a meeting with President William Ruto at State House, Ichung’wah argued that Kiambu residents identify differently, noting that while Mt. Kenya communities often view the mountain peaks, those in Kiambu see Ngong Hills and Kilima Mbogo. He insisted the county should be recognized as a distinct region.
The remarks drew sharp criticism from several leaders within Mt. Kenya. Former Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria dismissed the attempt to detach Kiambu, stressing that the county has always been integral to the region. He warned that attempts to rewrite history would not succeed.
Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa also faulted the comments, accusing President Ruto’s allies of attempting to isolate Kiambu as part of a “divide and rule” strategy. He maintained that the Mt. Kenya region remains united and will not allow political manipulation.
Ichung’wah’s remarks come amid renewed debate over the political and economic significance of Kiambu, with some leaders—including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki—backing calls to grant the county greater regional recognition, especially with Thika town set for elevation to city status.
The controversy is expected to deepen rifts in Mt. Kenya politics as the region positions itself ahead of the 2027 elections.
