The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has confirmed that all pending by-elections across the country will be conducted on November 27, 2025.
The announcement, issued through a gazette notice dated August 8, outlined the commission’s plan to fill various vacant positions at both county and national levels. The exercise will cover two main batches of elections, each involving different seats.
The first batch will include elections for Member of County Assembly (MCA) seats in Angata Nanyokie Ward (Samburu), Chemundu (Nandi), Chewani (Tana River), Fafi (Garissa), and Kariobangi North (Nairobi). Additional MCA contests will take place in Kisa East (Kakamega), Metkei (Elgeyo Marakwet), Mumbuni North (Machakos), Purko (Kajiado), and Tembelio (Uasin Gishu).
The second batch will focus on filling vacant senatorial and parliamentary seats. These include the Baringo Senate seat, and Member of Parliament positions in Banissa, Kasipul, Magarini, Malava, Mbeere North, and Ugunja constituencies.
IEBC has directed political parties intending to participate to submit the names and specimen signatures of authorised representatives by September 17. The commission has also reminded public officers wishing to vie for any seat that they must resign from their positions within seven days of the notice.
Aspiring independent candidates are required to have been unaffiliated with any political party for at least three months prior to the election date. Political parties have until October 2 to conclude their primaries, resolve internal disputes, and forward their list of nominees to the commission.
The nomination and registration of candidates—both party-affiliated and independent—will take place on October 8 and 9. The IEBC will publish the names and symbols of all independent candidates in the gazette at least two weeks before nomination day, in line with election regulations.
The announcement sets in motion a busy campaign period across the affected regions, with political parties and candidates now racing to meet the strict timelines.
