Kenya’s ever-outspoken political firebrand, Prof. George Wajackoyah, has proposed that marriage licenses in Kenya should be renewed every five years, just like contracts.
Taking to X, the former presidential candidate wrote, “Marriage licenses should be renewable after every 5 years,” adding that couples should have the opportunity to reassess their commitment rather than being locked into lifelong unions.
Wajackoyah's suggestion is as radical as it is reflective of modern-day relationship complexities, and it’s already sending shockwaves across social media.
Wajackoyah, who ran on a controversial 2022 presidential platform that included legalising marijuana to pay off Kenya’s debts, farming snakes for venom, and exporting hyena testicles for medicine, is no stranger to pushing boundaries.
While many dismiss his proposals as outlandish, they consistently trigger wide-ranging debates about law, culture, and the evolving social fabric of the nation. His latest idea takes a direct jab at Kenya’s current legal framework. Under the Marriage Act, marriages, whether civil, Christian, Hindu, Islamic, or customary, are lifelong commitments unless annulled, dissolved, or ended by death.
There’s no legal provision for “renewable” unions, making Wajackoyah’s suggestion a major deviation from tradition. Still, in a country where high-profile relationship drama makes frequent headlines, his timing couldn’t be more perfect.
