Inspector General of Police Kanja has suspended the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) and several police officers who were on duty following the controversial death of a detainee identified as Ojwang.
In an official statement released by the National Police Service, authorities claimed that Ojwang “hit his head on the wall” while in custody. He was reportedly rushed to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The statement, however, has drawn widespread public criticism and raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding the incident. Human rights organizations and members of the public have mounted pressure on the police to provide a transparent account and ensure accountability.
IG Kanja confirmed the suspensions, stating they are part of preliminary measures to pave the way for an impartial investigation. He assured the public that justice will be served and that any officer found to have acted unlawfully will face disciplinary and legal consequences.
“The safety and dignity of every person in custody must be protected at all times,” said Kanja. “We will not hesitate to take action against any officer who violates this duty.”
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has also launched its own inquiry into the death. Meanwhile, Ojwang’s family is calling for an autopsy and an independent postmortem to establish the actual cause of death.
The case has reignited long-standing concerns over police brutality and the treatment of detainees in Kenyan cells.
