India to Reopen Embassy in Kabul After Four-Year Hiatus Amid Renewed Engagement with Taliban

India is preparing to reopen its embassy in Kabul, marking a major diplomatic shift after a four-year absence that began when the Taliban took power in Afghanistan in 2021. The decision signals New Delhi’s cautious move toward re-establishing a formal presence in the country and engaging with the Taliban-led administration to protect its regional interests.

The embassy was shut down in August 2021 as the security situation deteriorated rapidly during the Taliban’s return to power. Since then, India has maintained only limited contact with Afghan authorities through humanitarian and technical assistance, including the delivery of food, medicine, and aid for infrastructure projects.

Officials in New Delhi have described the move as a “measured and pragmatic” step aimed at ensuring the safety of Indian nationals, reviving stalled development projects, and supporting Afghanistan’s humanitarian needs. While India has not officially recognized the Taliban government, sources suggest that quiet diplomatic engagements in recent months have paved the way for greater cooperation on issues such as counterterrorism and trade.

Analysts view the reopening as part of India’s broader strategy to maintain influence in a region where China and Pakistan have deepened their roles since the Taliban takeover. Restoring a diplomatic presence will allow India to monitor developments more closely and safeguard its long-standing investments in Afghanistan’s reconstruction.

For the Taliban, India’s return represents a potential boost to international legitimacy and economic collaboration. As one of the few major powers yet to restore full diplomatic operations in Kabul, India’s decision could also encourage other nations to consider a similar approach.
