Isaac Mutuma has been sworn in as the new Governor of Meru County on Monday, March 17, following the impeachment of former Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at Mwendantu grounds in Meru Town.

Mutuma, who previously served as the Deputy Governor, assumed the county's top leadership position in accordance with Article 182(2) of the Kenyan Constitution, which stipulates that the deputy governor assumes office upon a vacancy in the governor's position.

The transition follows a High Court ruling on Friday, March 14, where Justice Bahati Mwamuye upheld Mwangaza's impeachment, stating that the petition challenging her removal failed to meet the legal threshold to overturn the Senate's decision.

The court affirmed that Mwangaza was given a fair hearing and dismissed her request to invalidate the gazette notice confirming her removal.

Mutuma's background includes service as a Senior Officer in the Kenya Prisons Service and as a Reverend in the Methodist Churches of Kenya.

He was elected as Deputy Governor in 2022 alongside Mwangaza, both running as independent candidates.
