Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi was found unconscious and injured in a coffee plantation in Kibichoi, Kiambu County, on the morning of Monday, May 26, hours after being allegedly abducted outside a church in Mugutha.
According to multiple eyewitnesses and video footage shared online, the MP was seized by unidentified individuals around midday on Sunday, May 25, moments after attending a service at the Full Gospel Church in Mugutha. Witnesses say the assailants, who arrived in a silver Subaru Forester, pretended to be worshippers before forcibly bundling Koimburi into the vehicle.
His wife, Ann Koimburi, sustained injuries while attempting to intervene. In an emotional statement to reporters, she said, “They looked like ordinary people going to church, but suddenly they grabbed him and pushed him into their car. I tried to hold onto him, but one of them pushed me down.”
Koimburi was discovered the next morning by local residents who found him unconscious and with visible injuries. He was initially taken to Plainsview Hospital near Ruiru before being transferred to Nairobi Hospital for specialized care. Medical staff confirmed that he was receiving treatment and under observation.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has denied any involvement in the incident, following widespread speculation about the role of state agencies. “The DCI was not involved in the arrest or abduction of the Member of Parliament,” a statement from the agency read.
DCI also confirmed that Koimburi was under investigation for alleged land fraud and possible misuse of Constituency Development Funds (CDF). However, they emphasized that the investigation was being conducted in accordance with the law.
Lawmakers across the political divide have condemned the incident and called for a swift and transparent investigation. “No Kenyan deserves to be abducted or harmed in such a manner, regardless of the circumstances,” said Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah during a press briefing in Nairobi.
The motive behind the abduction remains unclear. Police have launched a probe into the matter, with security agencies collecting CCTV footage from the area and recording statements from eyewitnesses.
Koimburi, who has represented Juja since a by-election in 2021, has not yet issued a personal statement due to his medical condition.
