KAKAMEGA CHAOS: DCP CONVOY DISRUPTED BY POLICE IN MALALA'S HOMETOWN

KAKAMEGA, Kenya — A homecoming turned hostile on Saturday as Cleophas Malala’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) tour descended into chaos in Kakamega, his hometown.

Police clashed with hundreds of DCP supporters after the party's convoy, led by Malala and accompanied by Senators Methu Muhia (Nyandarua) and Karungo Thang’wa (Kiambu), encountered a police barricade while entering Kakamega town. Officers lobbed teargas to disperse the crowd, triggering panic and running battles in the streets.

“This was a peaceful procession. The use of brute force, live bullets, and unnecessary teargas was uncalled for,” Malala said, accusing police of using live ammunition. “Kenya is a democratic nation governed by the rule of law—this intimidation will not deter us.”

The western region tour marked the party’s first major activity ahead of its official launch on June 3, 2025, led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The newly formed party is seen as a strategic vehicle for the 2027 general election.

DCP’s interim leadership includes Malala as Deputy Party Leader, former Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi as Organising Secretary, and former Laikipia Woman Rep Catherine Waruguru as National Women Leader. David Mingati (Kajiado) will serve as National Chairperson, while ex-Starehe MP Charles Njagua leads the caucus of eminent persons.

The confrontation in Kakamega signals rising political tensions as Gachagua and his allies mount a new challenge to the current political order.
