Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has expressed his heartfelt condolences following the tragic crash of an AMREF Flying Doctors medical evacuation plane in Mwihoko, Kiambu County, on Thursday, August 7, 2025. Taking to his official X account on the night of the incident, Kalonzo conveyed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, calling it a devastating day for the country. “My heart and thoughts are with the families and friends grieving following the terrible AMREF plane tragedy in Mwihoko, Kiambu County. To the AMREF family, I stand beside you in compassion,” he stated. “The loss of one life hurts. That of many in one day is truly devastating. May their souls rest in eternal peace.”
He further comfort to the bereaved and those injured saying, “To all bereaved families and the injured, may God’s grace offer comfort at the most difficult time.” The crash occurred on Thursday afternoon when a light aircraft operated by AMREF Flying Doctors went down in a residential area near Mwihoko Secondary School in Utawala. The Cessna Citation XLS, registered as 5Y-FDM, had departed from Wilson Airport in Nairobi at 2:14 PM and was en route to Hargeisa, Somalia, on a, medical mission. Tragically, all four member personnel on board, two doctors and two nurses lost their lives, along with two civilians on the ground. At least two others sustained injuries.
Kiambu County Commissioner Henry Wafula confirmed the fatalities and said that investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing. In a statement, AMREF Flying Doctors CEO Stephen Gitau confirmed the aircraft’s departure and intended destination, noting, “At this time, we are cooperating fully with relevant aviation authorities and emergency response teams to establish the facts surrounding the situation.”
