KAMALA HARRIS RULES OUT 2026 CALIFORNIA GUBERNATORIAL BID

Former Vice President Kamala Harris has announced she will not run for governor of California in 2026, ending months of speculation about a potential return to state politics.
In a statement released on July 30, 2025, Harris said she arrived at the decision after “deep reflection,” adding that while she remains committed to public service, her immediate plans do not involve seeking elected office.
“I love this state, its people, and its promise… But after much thought, I’ve decided I will not be a candidate for governor in this election,” Harris said.
Harris, who previously served as California’s Attorney General and U.S. Senator, had been seen as a leading contender to succeed Governor Gavin Newsom, who is term-limited and will leave office in early 2027. Her decision leaves the Democratic field wide open, with names like Katie Porter, Eleni Kounalakis, Xavier Becerra, and Toni Atkins among those reportedly eyeing a run.
While stepping back from gubernatorial ambitions, Harris has not ruled out a future run for national office. Political analysts note her continued national profile positions her as a possible contender in the 2028 presidential race.
Harris said she will instead focus on supporting Democratic candidates and causes across the country.
Her announcement marks a significant moment in California’s political landscape, as the state prepares for a competitive and high-stakes election season in 2026.
