People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua has disclosed that she reached out to ODM party leader Raila Odinga following the July 7 Saba Saba protests, urging him to reconsider his backing of the government. Speaking on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, Karua revealed that she confronted Raila over his stance, questioning how he could align himself with a regime responsible for the deaths of protesters. She emphasized that she did not seek a debate but simply wanted Raila to reflect on his position. “I told him this wasn’t up for discussion, just a question for his conscience. Isn’t it time to withdraw his support? Without him, this regime would collapse. Even Parliament could hold it accountable,” she added.
Karua explained that she felt compelled to challenge Raila’s moral standing, given his history as a pro-democracy advocate. During their conversation, Raila reportedly expressed frustration over being misunderstood regarding his proposal for a national dialogue. The Narc-Kenya leader further revealed that Raila proposed a face to face meeting, to discuss finer details of the national conclave that the former PM had proposed but she declined, citing her upcoming trip to the U.S.
According to Karua, meeting with Raila would be used against her by Ruto’s camp as a pacifier to calm Kenyans and distract them from addressing the pressing issues facing the nation such as graft, the high cost of living, and poor governance. Karua’s remarks highlight growing tensions among opposition figures over Raila’s perceived cooperation with President William Ruto’s administration.
