Impeached Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has made a political comeback after being named the new party leader of Umoja na Maendeleo Party (UMP). According to a gazette notice dated July 1 and published by the Registrar of Political Parties, Ann Nderitu, Mwangaza takes over the position from Charles Wambora Mugambi.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 20(1)(c) and (e) of the Political Parties Act, 2011, the Registrar of Political Parties gives notice that Umoja Na Maendeleo Party (UMP) intends to make changes to its details,” read the notice in part.
Mwangaza’s rise comes after she exited President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and blamed the party for orchestrating her impeachment. She joined UDA in April 2023 after winning the Meru governorship as an independent candidate in 2022.
Following her ouster by the Senate in a motion sponsored by UDA-affiliated MCAs, Mwangaza began mobilizing support for a new political outfit ahead of the 2027 elections. She has since been recruiting leaders for the party’s formal launch.
