The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a temporary two-week closure of a section of the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway (A8). In a statement released on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, the Authority confirmed that the highway will be closed between Makupa Bridge and Changamwe Interchange. The closure is set to b begin on Saturday, August 23, 2025, and will last until Sunday, September 7, 2025. KeNHA explained that the closure is necessary to carry out road construction and drainage works aimed at enhancing connectivity between Makupa Bridge and the Changamwe area.
KeNHA warned motorists of potential traffic disruptions during this period and advised them to use the designated service lanes as outlined in the traffic plan or follow instructions from traffic marshals. Motorists travelling towards Nairobi will be diverted before reaching Makupa Bridge and will rejoin the highway after the closed section. Those heading towards Mombasa will be redirected via a diversion route near Seven Stars and Mitchell Cotts to avoid the construction zone. This closure affects the main access point to Mombasa Island, with expected delays likely to disrupt travel and impact business activities.
Former KeNHA Director General Kung’u Ndungu’u stated that these works are intended to improve connectivity between Makupa Bridge and Changamwe, while assuring road users of the Authority’s commitment to minimizing disruptions.
