Kenya Urged to Prioritize Youth and Women in Agriculture amid Food security crisis

As Kenya faces a deepening food security crisis, a young Kenyan leader’s recent message from Egypt underscores a vital solution: empowering youth and women as the key to transforming the country’s agriculture sector.

Jenniffer Wairimu Waruingi, President of the Kenya Youth Organization and founder of the Waridi Foundation, delivered a compelling speech at an African Union forum in Cairo.

She emphasized that youth and women are not just participants but essential drivers of Africa’s—and Kenya’s—agricultural future.

“Without the full participation of youth and women, Kenya—and Africa—will struggle to achieve food sovereignty,” Wairimu said. “They are the farmers, innovators, and leaders of today, yet they remain underrepresented and sidelined at decision-making tables.”

Her message serves as a wake-up call for Kenya’s policymakers to prioritize policies and programs that support youth-led agribusinesses and women in farming. Wairimu urged the government to recognize and work with grassroots youth organizations, emphasizing that their contributions must be valued beyond mere tokenism.

She also praised Egypt’s agricultural innovations—despite its harsh desert terrain—and challenged Kenya to adopt similar bold strategies, such as investing in irrigation, biotechnology, and research, to combat climate challenges and boost resilience.

“The future of Kenya’s agriculture depends on harnessing the energy, creativity, and leadership of our youth and women,” she stressed. “We must activate their potential and give them the tools and opportunities to lead us out of this food crisis.”
