KENYAN DRIVERS DECRY RISING HARASSMENT BY BODA BODA RIDERS

The Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) has raised alarm over what it terms as escalating harassment and violent attacks by boda boda riders across the country.
In a strongly worded statement on Monday September 8, 2025, MAK accused the riders of engaging in reckless behavior, including riding against traffic, ignoring traffic lights, and even using pedestrian footpaths. The association noted that these acts are often carried out in full view of law enforcement, yet little action is taken.
Motorists have reported incidents in which their vehicles were stoned, vandalized, or torched in areas such as Juja and Luanda. Pedestrians have also fallen victim to groups of riders accused of operating with impunity.
According to MAK, boda boda riders frequently flee after causing accidents, leaving drivers to bear losses. In many cases, riders allegedly mobilize mobs to intimidate motorists, demand arbitrary compensation, and, in some instances, assault or rob them.
“The impunity witnessed in this sector is unacceptable. Authorities only act when high-profile individuals are affected, leaving ordinary citizens to suffer,” the statement read.
The motorists’ lobby is now calling on boda boda associations to rein in rogue operators and foster mutual respect on the roads. “We recognize boda boda riding as a legitimate livelihood, but riders must remember that motorists are also their customers and deserve safety and respect,” MAK added.
The concerns come in the wake of heightened tensions in Thika, where a police officer recently shot and killed two boda boda riders following a road altercation, sparking violent protests and renewed calls for tighter regulation of the sector.
