KENYANS URGED TO REGISTER AS VOTERS

Low turnout was witnessed across parts of the nation as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission started the mass registration of voters on Tuesday in preparation for the 2027 general election.

It started on Monday in Kajiado County since the commission seeks to register 6.3 million new voters and update voters who wish to transfer their registration details to other polling centers.

In mid-morning on Tuesday in Marsabit County, a few new voters have been registered as limited residents turned up for the exercise.

Marsabit county's IEBC Returning Officer Simon Sanchan Lokadio noted that the number of voters in Marsabit has risen by 47,976, with Moyale constituency leading in the new registrations.
The 166,912 voters in Marsabit County last year has now increased to a figure of 214,508.

"The performance is quite low, but it is better in Moyale. I call on individuals to come and register as voters early and not wait for the eleventh hour of the exercise," Mr Lokadio said.

Meanwhile, in Embu County, the elections manager, Agnes Mutisya, also reported low voter turnout.

She said that voter registration is still to be conducted in three constituencies of the county until 2027, but clarified that Mbeere North residents will, however, only be registered after the outstanding by-election in the constituency.
iEBC last conducted voter registration in 2022, and it was suspended in June ahead of the August polls.

Under the new voter registration drive, Kenyans aged 18 years and above who have not yet been enrolled as voters are supposed to produce their original national identity card or a legitimate Kenyan passport to register at constituency IEBC offices and all Huduma Centres nationwide.
