Former Chief Justice David Maraga has ruled out mounting a campaign drive in his Kisii and Nyamira home counties as he seeks the presidency in 2027.
Speaking during a public forum, Maraga said he would not be drawn into ethnic-based mobilization, stressing that his political ambitions are rooted in uniting Kenyans rather than exploiting tribal loyalties.
“Some people are saying I should go to Kisii and Nyamira and get the support of those people. That’s one of the things I’m going to fight. This ethnic balkanization is what is creating huge problems,” Maraga said.
He insisted that votes from Kisii and Nyamira alone cannot guarantee him victory, adding that he will instead appeal to all Kenyans on the basis of integrity, competence, and leadership qualities.
The former CJ argued that elections should not be reduced to tribal arithmetic but should be about choosing leaders who have a vision for the country’s future.
“I want to be elected because Kenyans believe in my ability to serve the whole nation, not because I come from a particular community,” he added.
Maraga’s remarks come as the political scene intensifies ahead of the 2027 General Election, with several leaders already beginning to position themselves.
