Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has signaled readiness to conclude trade negotiations with the United States despite escalating tariff threats from Washington.
Modi described India and the U.S. as “close friends and natural partners” with “limitless potential,” expressing optimism that talks would reach a resolution soon. His remarks come a day after U.S. President Donald Trump urged the European Union to impose 100% tariffs on imports from India and China over their purchases of Russian oil.
The U.S. has already raised tariffs on some Indian goods to 50%, and Trump has warned of harsher measures if trade barriers remain.
Even so, both leaders struck a conciliatory tone. Trump said negotiations were continuing and voiced confidence in a “successful conclusion,” adding that he expects to speak with Modi in the coming weeks.
The discussions highlight the balancing act facing New Delhi as it seeks to protect domestic industries while maintaining strong ties with Washington amid global economic tensions.
