A 30-year-old preacher from Murang’a collapsed after nearly 80 hours of a tree-hugging challenge aimed at urging the Kenyan government to treat cancer as a national disaster. The challenge, which began on January 4 at 9 p.m., was an attempt to beat Truphena Muthoni’s previous 72-hour record and highlight the need for better cancer screening and affordable care in the country.
After 79 hours and 40 minutes, the preacher collapsed from dehydration and exhaustion. Despite the collapse, he was met with support from crowds, media personnel, members of the military, and even Muthoni herself, who cheered him on for his perseverance. He was subsequently rushed to Murang’a County Level 5 Hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition.
Kenyans online lauded his determination, sharing messages of support and amplifying calls for the government to take urgent action on cancer, a disease that continues to place heavy financial and emotional burdens on families nationwide.
The preacher’s initiative has reignited discussions on the importance of accessible healthcare, early detection, and affordable cancer treatment, putting pressure on policymakers to prioritize the disease as a national health concern.
