The notorious matatu known as 'Uppercut' which recently sparked outrage after a video showed it dangerously swerving on Thika Road, has been involved in a crash in Dedan Kimathi Ward, Tetu Constituency, Nyeri County.
The matatu made headlines earlier this month after footage circulated online showing it weaving erratically on the Nyeri-Nairobi Highway, with some passengers hanging precariously from its windows as it sped past other vehicles. The clip raised serious concerns about the enforcement of road safety regulations for public service vehicles.
Following the viral incident, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the police swiftly launched investigations. The matatu’s driver, identified as Cliff Mike Mwathi Wangui, was arrested, and legal action was taken against both him and other parties linked to the vehicle, including the conductor and the registered owner. NTSA also moved to suspend licenses and review the operator’s compliance status.
However, just days after the crackdown, *Uppercut* was reportedly involved in an accident during a road trip to Nyeri. Details about injuries or fatalities remain unclear, but the crash has reignited public debate about rogue matatus and the effectiveness of traffic enforcement.
Authorities say investigations into the crash are underway as they continue to monitor compliance within the sector. The NTSA has also reiterated its warning to public service vehicle operators against endangering lives on the road.
