Geoffrey Mosiria, Nairobi County’s Environment Chief Officer, has announced the rollout of new litter bins across the Central Business District (CBD), made from fibre material that holds no scrap value to deter theft and vandalism. The move comes after a wave of stolen metal bins in the city. According to Mosiria, the plastic bins are designed specifically to discourage theft, as they cannot be sold on the black market “We are now installing bins made of material that’s useless to thieves. Even if someone steals them, they can’t profit,” Mosiria said.
He urged Nairobi residents to use the bins responsibly and report any acts of vandalism or theft. “Let’s protect our city. If you see someone tampering with the bins, speak up. And if you’re caught dumping waste irresponsibly, especially in the CBD, be prepared to face arrest,” he warned. The county also plans to intensify action against those involved in the illegal scrap metal trade linked to stolen bins.
