Kenya’s former Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs Ababu Namwamba has been elected chairman of the G77 + China, the largest coalition of developing nations at the United Nations. He officially assumed the role on July 3, 2025, during a handover ceremony in Nairobi, succeeding Egypt’s Ambassador Wael Nasreldin Attiya. The G77 founded in 1964 to empower developing countries in UN economic and social forums, now comprises 134 member states alongside China. Under Egypt’s leadership, the bloc prioritized climate diplomacy and equitable global governance, with Ambassador Attiya credited for reinforcing unity amid growing international challenges.
Namwamba’s appointment marks a significant moment for Kenya, elevating its role in shaping global dialogues on climate justice, biodiversity, and sustainable development. Analysts attribute Kenya’s successful bid to its active engagement in multilateral environment forums. While the G77+ China lacks formal binding authority, it serves as a key platform for coordinating voting and negotiation strategies within the UN.
Namwamba faces the challenge of uniting the bloc’s diverse members from small island nations to emerging economies around a shared vision for a more inclusive global system. His leadership will be pivotal in advancing the bloc’s agenda, with expectations high for policies that address the priorities of developing nations.
