An exhibition highlighting the ecological and socio-economic significance of the Mara River basin has been officially launched in Nairobi.
The Mara River Basin Exhibition was unveiled on March 5, 2026, at the headquarters of the National Museums of Kenya in Nairobi.
The exhibition is the culmination of years of scientific research conducted under the Mara Wildlife Subsidies Research Program (MWSP) and seeks to translate scientific findings into an engaging learning experience for the public.
It traces the journey of the Mara River from its source in the Mau Forest Complex through the renowned Maasai Mara–Serengeti ecosystem before draining into Lake Victoria.
According to organizers, the exhibition aims to help the public understand the vital role the river plays in sustaining biodiversity, wildlife and the livelihoods of communities living along the basin in both Kenya and Tanzania.
The display also illustrates the interaction between terrestrial wildlife and aquatic ecosystems, demonstrating how wildlife movements contribute nutrients that support aquatic life in the river system.
Researchers further used the platform to highlight emerging threats facing the basin, including deforestation, pollution, competition for water resources, human-wildlife conflict, climate change and fish die-offs.
They emphasized the need for collaborative conservation efforts and sustainable land-use practices to safeguard the future of the river ecosystem.
The launch brought together researchers, policymakers, conservation partners and members of the public for a public lecture at the Louis Leakey Auditorium followed by the official opening and guided viewing of the exhibition.
